Auto Body

Auto Body provides students with exposure and training in the major aspects of auto body repair, including replacement and repairing of body sheet metal parts, measuring and repairing of unibody and frame type cars, preparation and application for refinishing of new and damaged body sheet metal parts.

Career Lab projects will also provide students with hands-on experience in collision estimating, replacement of body glass, replacement or repairing of body trim parts or accessories and complete overall refinishing of cars.

Auto Body refinishing technicians are employed in new car dealerships and independent auto body shops. Excellent opportunities also exist in many related fields and businesses, such as insurance companies, paint manufacturers and suppliers, and auto parts sales. ADP estimating software certification is also available in the Auto Body career area.

ACADEMIC / EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS

MATH SKILLS

Convert and/or perform practical applications involving fractions and decimals, percentages, measurement, ratio, and proportion. Compute discount, interest, profit and loss, commission, markups, etc. Calculate surface area, volume, weights, measures, and circumference. Understand square roots and radicals, properties of angles, essentials of trigonometry, and proper use of all measuring devices used in the career area.

LANGUAGE / ENGLISH SKILLS

Reading: Read a variety of novels, magazines, newspapers, trade-related technical manuals, and encyclopedias. Read safety rules, instructions in the use and maintenance of shop tools and equipment, and proper job procedures.

SCIENCE SKILLS

Demonstrate technical competencies in the interpretation of scientific processes and principles, utilization of measurements, operation of specific technical equipment and techniques used in problem solving.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Demonstrate computer literacy to mix paint using the computer, write documents, and process work orders.

POST-SECONDARY CAREER PATHS

Four-year apprenticeship program; two-year technical degree study in auto body or metal technology.

Starting $8-9 per hour up to $20 per hour- (flat rate - $30 per hour).
