Auto Technology

This program provides students the opportunity to succeed and become skilled in automotive technology. Students will be able to acquire skills in the following automotive certification areas: Engine Repair, Automatic Trans/Transaxle, Manual Drive Train and Axles, Suspension and Steering, Brakes, Electrical/Electronics Systems, Heating and Air Conditioning, and Engine Performance.

Automotive technology includes the use of diagnostic equipment to accurately diagnose the modern electronic engine, chassis, body and emission control systems. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the co-op work experience.

ACADEMIC / EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS

MATH SKILLS

Compute discount, interest, profit, and loss; commission, markups, and selling price; ratio and proportion and percentages. Calculate variables and formulas, monomials, and polynomials; ratio and proportion variables; radicals. Geometry: Calculate circumference, area and volume for plane and solid figures. Understand the kinds and properties of angles and intersections.

LANGUAGE / ENGLISH SKILLS

Read a variety of trade-related manuals, instructions, magazines, and encyclopedias. Read safety rules, instructions in the use and maintenance of shop tools and equipment, and methods and procedures in mechanical drawing and layout work.

SCIENCE SKILLS

Demonstrate technical competencies and logical thinking skills in the interpretation of processes and principles. Utilize measurements in the operation of specific technical equipment plus possess the ability to observe, classify, measure, infer, manipulate variables, and interpret charts, graphs, and tables.

POST-SECONDARY CAREER PATHS

Two and four-year technical degree study in auto technology. Numerous dealer workshops and training schools are available on a continuing basis through employers.
