The Business Technology cluster provides the necessary training for entry into the administrative, accounting, banking, and computer technology fields.
Learning experiences include application of computer technology in word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation graphics, and accounting. Instruction is received in business correspondence, research, office procedures, ethics, business ownership, and employment- seeking skills.
Students have the opportunity to participate in a junior internship program and senior cooperative education at a local area business.
ACADEMIC / EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS
Add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure. Perform the four operations with common and decimal fractions and with all American monetary units. Compute discount, interest, profit, and loss; commissions, markups, and selling price; ratio and proportion and percentages. Algebra: calculate variables and formulas, monomials and polynomials; ratio and proportion variables; radicals. Geometry: calculate plane and solid figures, circumference, area and volume. Understand kinds of angles, and properties of pairs and angles.
LANGUAGE / ENGLISH SKILLS
Read novels, newspapers, periodicals and journals. Use dictionaries, encyclopedias and reference manuals. Prepare business correspondence, summaries, and reports using prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.
Apply the scientific method in thinking and problem-solving skills. Apply process skills (e.g. observe, classify, measure, infer, and manipulate variables; interpret charts, graphs, and tables.) Develop an appreciation for technological advancement and application of office technologies. Use data for making intelligent decisions and establishing work priorities. Relate safety issues to the workplace.
POST SECONDARY CAREER PATHS
Two-year technical degree in computer programming or office systems. Four-year degree in accounting, business administration, computer programming, systems design and analysis, office management, and management information systems.
Starting $8-9 per hour up to $14 per hour and beyond.
