Principal's Message

I am very proud to be the new principal of a "Superior" rated school!  As a team, we came together, and increased our reading and math scores.  These incredible gains are due to the teacher's and students' hard work and dedication.

Our school's instructional focus is "Continuous Improvement."  As a school, we are constantly reflecting on what we are currently doing, and what we need to do to improve.  Our entire teaching staff has been trained in Learning Focused Strategies, which are researched based strategies that improve instruction.  Teachers are collaborating together in Small Learning Communities, to ensure that students are receiving the best lessons and assignments.  In addition, our teachers meet weekly to discuss student's needs and progress, and if students need additional assistance with understanding a concept, there are intervention periods to help students.  As a Partnership Zone School, we have given a great deal of thought in how our school will meet the needs of all our students.

Howard High School is also increasing the amount of technology in the building.  This year, our plan is for every classroom to have a Smartboard and document camera.  We have plans to purchase additional student computers, with the goal to eventually have one computer for each student.

The 36 million dollar renovation, which was granted by Governor Jack Markell, is underway.  Currently, the main entrance and main office are being remolded.  The attractive new entrance will be state of the art with better security measures.  Additional conference rooms and classrooms are also part of the first phase of the renovation.  The second phase will include upgrades to several vocational classrooms, gymnasium, cafeteria, and guidance office.  There are several phases to the renovation, and the full scope of the project will be completed over the next few years.

As the school year continues, our goal is for the staff and students to continually be reflective and think about what they can do to "improve" themselves.  As a school, we will all work together to ensure that Howard High School of Technology continues to be a Superior Rated School!
